Hey friends!
Today I’m going to introduce you to how transportation works in Lund. Whether you’re staying for a semester or a few years, getting around is pretty easy once you know your options. Let’s get into it!
🚲 First of all: Bicycles!
In Lund, biking is by far the most popular way to get around. The city is super bike-friendly, with dedicated bike lanes pretty much everywhere.
But do you really need a bike? Well, that depends:
- What time of year you’re coming
- How comfortable you are with biking
- And how far your accommodation is from your campus or city center
👉 I’ll link a resource below to help you decide if a bike is necessary for your situation and where to get it.
Where to get a bike in Lund:
- Facebook Marketplace or Blocket (second-hand)
- Biltema or local bike shops (for new bikes)
- Some shops even offer rental or loan systems—great if you’re an exchange student staying for just 6 months. You usually just need to pay a deposit.
I personally bought my bike through Blocket, and it worked out somehow. Had to change a lot of stuffs.
🚌🚋🚆 Now, if you’re going further than a bike can take you:
You’ll want to use public transportation, which is super well-connected and easy to use.
Everything is run by Skånetrafiken, and they have an app you must download. I’ll drop the link below.
Skånetrafiken Homepage: https://www.skanetrafiken.se
Download app: https://www.skanetrafiken.se/appen
Through the Skånetrafiken app, you can:
- Buy bus, tram, and train tickets
- Choose between a single ride, 24-hour pass, or monthly ticket so on.
- See the zones each ticket covers (Lund, Malmö, etc.)
⚠️ Keep in mind: If you only buy a ticket for the Lund area, you can’t use it to travel to places like Malmö or Copenhagen. You’ll need to buy a larger zone or region ticket.
And yeah… traveling between cities can get a bit expensive. But here’s where it gets better 👇
🎓 Student discounts:
Make sure to get your student discount by downloading the Mecenat app and verifying your student status. It can save you a good amount on tickets!
Check Mercenat: https://mecenat.com/se
💡 Pro tip: Save even more on long-distance tickets
There’s a Facebook group where Skånetrafiken users share or lend their monthly tickets—especially useful if you’re planning a trip to Copenhagen.
For example, a one-way trip to Copenhagen might normally cost around 180 SEK, but with a shared ticket, it could drop to 140 SEK or even less!
I’ll also link that Facebook group below if you want to check it out.
